Gevint (1980) is an Israeli-American interdisciplinary artist currently based in Brooklyn. Her work examines personal and social relationships to architectural spaces and built environments specifically touching on topics such as displacement, alienation, and failure.Through images, videos, and installations she reflects on the power of cultural myths and archetypes in a contemporary context. Gevint obtained my BFA from Bezalel Art Academy, Jerusalem and moved to NYC after receiving a scholarship to complete my MFA at Parsons. Its distinctive stacked geometry and use of innovative materials reflected a vision of progress and human ingenuity. Filmed in 2018, after the building had been abandoned and prior to its demolition, the work captures the structure in a state of quiet obsolescence—its original promise suspended in time. The film brings together image, sound, and fragmented text drawn from dystopian literature of the same era, including works such as J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise. Through this pairing, the piece reflects on the tension between modernism’s utopian aspirations and the psychological unease embedded within visions of the future. Originally conceived as a generative, two-channel installation in which text, sound, and image are continuously recombined, the work explores how narrative emerges through shifting relationships between these elements. It examines human interaction with nature and how nature reclaims itself through natural disasters. The film was shot at the Dead Sea where sinkholes are ‘swallowing’ man-made habitats due to evaporation and climate change. Although dangerous and unpredictable, there is beauty in these colorful pools which have been a mysterious source for new microbial life in an ecosystem infamous for its barren characteristics. The voice-over is based on an interview conducted with a geologist who was ‘swallowed’ by a sinkhole. Constructed from discarded residential shutters found on Craigslist, the work consists of three collapsing houses installed directly on the landscape. The project began with my interest in the idea of home—not as a fixed place, but as something inherently fragile. By building houses entirely from shutters, architectural elements associated with privacy and protection, I transform symbols of security into unstable structures that appear to sink into the ground. Inside the camera like viewing boxes are three different 8mm film of imaginary structures created from miniature 3D printed models. The structures resemble ex-rays of buildings that disintegrate as they dissolve and reappear. My focus is a collaged architecture, which stands as a metaphor for a failed promise. The process includes collaging internet-based imagery that references Modernism, a style affiliated with forms of Utopian thought which strived to better human life through design of space. By creating fictitious collages, I perpetuate the failure of Utopian architecture. These uncanny structures reflect on the power of the cultural archetype in a contemporary context and examines social consciousness lingering between past - future, Utopia -dystopia. &nbsp;
